2 Normal Motility and Smooth Muscle Function

چکیده
The gastrointestinal tract normally functions to move ingested food, in an organized fashion, from the oropharynx, through the stomach, small intestine and colon and into the rectum, from which it can be expelled. The primary function of the colon is to absorb water and electrolytes from the chyme delivered and, thus, determine the frequency, consistency, and volume of stools eliminated. The colon (i) mixes luminal contents so that they are optimally exposed to the absorptive mucosal surface; (ii) slowly propels feces caudally to allow adequate time for the absorption of water, electrolytes, and metabolic products of bacterial degradation; (iii) allows storage of feces; and (iv) rapidly and efficiently propels feces during defecation. Transit time through the colon is significantly slower than through the proximal bowel and is achieved through contractions that are less coordinated. The discoordination is due to highly variable frequency and phase unlocking of electrical activity within the colon. 2 Normal Motility and Smooth Muscle Function

Smooth Muscle α Actin (Acta2) and Myofibroblast Function during Hepatic Wound Healing
Smooth muscle α actin (Acta2) expression is largely restricted to smooth muscle cells, pericytes and specialized fibroblasts, known as myofibroblasts. Liver injury, associated with cirrhosis, induces transformation of resident hepatic stellate cells into liver specific myofibroblasts, also known as activated cells. Here, we have used in vitro and in vivo wound healing models to explore the func...
متن کاملKinase II - 2 and Fyn
Background: Increased vascular smooth muscle cell motility results in neointimal formation. Results: CaMKII2 and Fyn physically interact and CaMKII2 activity regulates complex formation, Fyn activity, and motility. Conclusion: CaMKII2 and Fyn regulate VSM cell motility due to their physical and functional interaction. Significance: Coupling CaMKII2 and Fyn in VSM provides a defined mechanis...
متن کاملIn vivo and in vitro effects of Salsola collina on gastrointestinal motility in rats
Objective(s): Salsola collina is widely distributed along the Bohai coast and consumed as an edible plant by native residents. We have found surprisingly that S. collina extracts promoted gastrointestinal motility in mice previously. In the present study, effects of S. collina on gastrointestinal motility in rats and its underlying mechanism were explored.<st...
متن کاملAbnormal motility in patients with ulcerative colitis: the role of inflammatory cytokines.
HYPOTHESIS Interleukin 1 beta (IL-1 beta) levels are elevated in the colonic mucosa of patients with ulcerative colitis (UC). We propose that IL-1 beta may also be elevated in the circular muscle layer of the colon and may be partially responsible for the motility dysfunction observed in patients with UC. DESIGN Cohort analytic study. SETTING Research laboratory in a tertiary academic medic...
متن کاملAre interstitial cells of Cajal plurifunction cells in the gut?
The proposed functions of the interstitial cells of Cajal (ICC) are to 1) pace the slow waves and regulate their propagation, 2) mediate enteric neuronal signals to smooth muscle cells, and 3) act as mechanosensors. In addition, impairments of ICC have been implicated in diverse motility disorders. This review critically examines the available evidence for these roles and offers alternate expla...
